Feng Shui & Water Features
Manipulate Energy By Using Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water
The five elements used in Feng Shui are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Five different types of energy can be used to facilitate harmony within your living area. These energies are discussed below. We use physical elements to talk about te energy since it makes the issue easier to understand and the energies have qualities that resembles those of the elements. Ideally, the elements would always be balanced perfectly with each other. But his is not usually the case. Unbalance between the elements and the energy they represent can bring difficulties in daily life in many areas including emotional, physical and spiritual areas. The five elements move in a predetermined way, so understanding the interaction between them can cure areas where we may be having difficulty.
* Wood embodies growth, productive and nurturing energy. Wood personalities can be outgoing and enthusiastic, but too much wood energy can result in impatience or undecisiveness. In the home wood can be symbolized by wood furniture, plants, natural paper, pictures of scenery, green shaded colors and others.
* Fire is associated with summer, midday and heat. Fire energy gives warmth, confidence and happiness, but too much can result in cruelty, violence and pride. Fire can be symbolized in the home by lights and candles, the color red or yellow, sunflowers andother solar objects.
* Earth is associated with stability, nurturing and supportiveness. Earth energy can facilitate loyalty, preserverence and strength, but too much earth energy can result in obsessiveness, lethargy, inability to enjoy life and being overly critical of others. Earth can be represented in the home by stone, brick, gardens and brown and tan colors.
* Metal portrays strength, containment and industriousness. Metal energy is strong in communication, innovation and quickness, but too much metal energy can result in destruction, emotional coldness and a focus on results over methods. Metal can be represented in the home by metal objects, spheres, mirrors, clocks and by silver, grey and gold colors.
* Water portrays beauty, contemplation, the inner self and subtle emotions and feelings. Water eenergy can be sensitive, empathetic, flexibility and adaptiveness, but too much water energy can result in fickleness, intrusiveness and difficulty making decisions. Water can be symbolized in the home by fountains, water features, meandering curves and the colors blue and aqua.
The elements can be understood in more then one way. The five elements can be seen as moving in a cycle. Water nourishes wood and enables it to grow, wood feeds fire and enables it to burn, which turns wood back into ashes or earth, deep within the earth metal is formed which at high temperature is a liquid which resembles water. The elements can also be approached by viewing them as controlling each other. Water extinguishes fire and is absorbed into the earth, the earth moves it's energy into wood as trees grow, wood can be destroyed by metal as people use tools to make wood into furniture or heat their homes.
The five elements can each make a complementary element stronger or weaken an opposing element. None of the elements work in isolation, so you always have to consider how the elements is interacting with the other elements around your home in order to position effectively. You may find that some difficulty is explained well by elements which are influencing each other in an adverse way. By altering your environment you may be able to get the elements back in proper relationship to one another which can in turn remove the difficulty you have been experiencing.
